In our series ‘HENK Visits’, we visit inspiring individuals to give you a glimpse into their daily lives at home. This time, we pay a visit to radio DJ, presenter, and soon-to-be mom, Nellie Benner.
In the heart of the Netherlands, we step into the vibrant interior of Nellie’s home, where she lives with her partner and their three cats. Their house has undergone a complete transformation, with color and personality taking center stage. We talked to Nellie about the renovation, her unique style, and how impending motherhood is influencing her interior design.
You recently renovated your home; what was most important to you in creating your interior?
We wanted plenty of light, colour, and a variety of materials in our interior. Almost everything in our home is sourced from Marktplaats or designed by artisans, which I love. I prefer avoiding standard items from wholesalers. During my pregnancy, I briefly leaned towards natural tones, but that turned out to be a mistake—it just doesn't suit me. Everyone should have their own space, but black metal frames, doors, and light-coloured herringbone floors can be quite dull, don't you think?
Where do you draw inspiration for your interior and how does your personal style reflect that?
My inspiration comes from a mix of what I find beautiful, what my partner likes, and the lovely images my best friend often sends. Pinterest is a great source to explore various styles, though you have to be careful not to lose track. It can be frustrating when you spot your dream table only to realise it's a designer piece worth 18,000 euros. That's when creativity kicks in. My personal style tends to deviate slightly from the norm—it can be ultra-stylish at times, but I also miss the mark occasionally."
If you had to choose one piece of furniture or decoration that best reflects your personality, what would it be?
The unfinished ceiling lamp. It illuminates, stands out, strives to do well, yet it has its imperfections. ;)
Which piece of furniture or decoration holds special meaning for you?
The drawings by my great-grandfather Gerrit Benner. He was a renowned painter.
Why did you choose the Trace Outdoor set?
A beautiful garden set lasts a lifetime. I adore its size and design—it's cute yet made from heavy-duty materials.
You're becoming a mother soon; has this influenced your interior choices?
I'm not a fan of pink, but I unexpectedly ordered a Bannach table with a pink top. Strange, isn't it? Perhaps I've been subtly influenced after all.
